Hemostasis is a critical first stage of the wound healing process. Efficient management of postoperative bleeding for amputations can be challenging. Many patients present with risk factors and complications such as diabetic, on dialysis, smoker or on anticoagulants.
Omni-stat is a fast acting, safe and easy to use temporary topical external hemostat:
The picture above shows a metatarsal amputation. The patient was on Plavix and aspirin. A distal Syme’s amputation of the left hallux was performed and also the head of the proximal phalanx was removed as it had some discoloration. After that the bone was bleeding well. Omni-stat granules were applied for two minutes and seven seconds. After doing that the wound was primarily closed. More information about this case study.
The image on the left shows a Chopart’s amputation on an elderly diabetic patient, on dialysis, who smokes and is anticoagulated. Omni-stat granules have been applied directly to the wound to stop the bleeding.
“It’s an instance where there is significant bleeding because the patient is anticoagulated. We have the capability now to be able to put something on that works independently of the clotting cascade, doesn’t harm the tissue, works relatively quick to achieve hemostasis, and then are able to utilize other therapies to help these patients with significant morbidity and mortality.”
Dr. Matthew Regulski, DPM, Podiatric Surgery Specialist, Browns Mills.
